The seals' cove among the cypresses

Foki is a small, enclosed cove on the north coast of Kefalonia, a few minutes from the picturesque village of Fiskardo. Its name is said to come from the seals ('fokies') that once climbed onto its sloping rocks to bask in the sun.

The wooded Erisos peninsula descends to the water with cypresses, pines, oaks and strawberry trees, while old ruins survive at one end of the bay. Tradition holds that the vessels of local sea captains wintered here, until in spring they set sail once more for the ports of the Black Sea.

The natural vegetation gives shade to the pebbled shore, and a taverna operates nearby. Neighbouring Fiskardo, which escaped the 1953 earthquake, still keeps its old Venetian buildings.
