The long shore beside the Roman villa
Skala beach extends beside the resort village of the same name, at the southeastern tip of Kefalonia. It is one of the island's longest organized shores, with sand, coarse sand and pebbles alternating along its length.
On the edge of the village survives the Roman villa of Skala, built around the 2nd century AD and discovered by chance in 1944, with excavations beginning in 1957. Its mosaic floors, among them a depiction of Phthonos being attacked by wild beasts, attest to a wealthy household of the Roman era, when the island lay on the sea routes between Italy and the East.
The beach is seasonally organized, with sun loungers, umbrellas, a beach bar, café and a lifeguard through the summer months, while tavernas and restaurants lie near the village. Access is by a paved road with parking nearby. It has been awarded a Blue Flag.
