The bay of abundant waters on Paliki

Petani (Petanoi) opens onto the northwest coast of the Paliki peninsula in western Kefalonia, a curving bay of pebble and coarse sand at the foot of steep hillsides. It is often described as a smaller sibling of Myrtos.

The place name is thought to be of Homeric origin: it is said to derive from the word 'epietani', describing a place with water in abundance all year round, and the area is indeed known for its plentiful fresh water. The beach took on the form it has kept to this day after the destructive earthquakes of 1953, which reshaped the landscape across much of the island.

It has no permanent organization, but there are tavernas and parking near the shore. Access is by a paved, yet very steep and descending road that drops down to the bay.

About this beach

Petani is exposed in the maistros — often choppy on summer NW/W afternoons. That comes from the measured shape of the coastline around it and our curated wind records — a seasonal picture, not a live forecast, so check live wind and waves before you go.

The bay at Petani opens to the north-west, so it usually has natural cover from southerly, south-easterly and south-westerly winds.

Petani has sand and pebbles underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.

For amenities, Petani has an organised beach, sunbeds, parking nearby and food nearby.
