Colourful pebbles at the gateway of Poros
Ragia, also known as Aragia, stretches along the seafront of Poros in southeastern Kefalonia, a long shore where small, colourful pebbles alternate with sandy stretches. The word 'poros' means a ford or crossing, and the settlement is said to owe its name to the river Vochynas, which descends through the well-known Poros gorge and finds here its passage to the sea.
In classical times Poros was, according to the sources, the harbour of the ancient city of Pronnoi, while the surrounding area holds notable monuments: the Mycenaean tholos tomb at nearby Tzanata, the Drakaina cave above the harbour, and the monastery of Atros, one of the oldest on the island. The settlement itself remained a small cluster of fishermen's huts until the devastating earthquake of 1953, after which it was rebuilt. Ragia is among the Blue Flag awarded beaches of Kefalonia.
The beach has organized sections near the settlement, with parasols and sunbeds in season, and parking, bars and restaurants nearby. The ground is coarse sand mixed with pebbles, and it is easily reached by a surfaced road.
