The sands beneath the flight path

Ammes is a sandy beach on the south coast of Kefalonia, beside Svoronata and close to the island's airport, about ten kilometres south of Argostoli. Its name comes from the Greek word for sand, 'ammos', and describes it exactly.

It lies along the same low, sandy Livathos coast as Avithos, and stands out for its closeness to the airport runway: planes pass low overhead as they come in to land. The beach has been awarded a Blue Flag.

It is not fully organized. A canteen and a café operate here, there is a parking area, and access is by a paved road.

The bay at Ammes opens to the south-west, so it usually has natural cover from northerly, north-easterly and north-westerly winds. Orientation only reflects which way the coast faces, not confirmed shelter, so check wind and waves in the app before you go.

Ammes has sand underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.

For amenities, Ammes has an organised beach, sunbeds and parking nearby.
