The hidden shore beneath white cliffs
Fteri lies on the northwestern coast of Kefalonia, in a secluded cove near Zola, a strip of white pebbles and sand beneath towering limestone cliffs. Its name recalls the fern (fteri in Greek), the plant that, it is said, grew on the wooded slopes above the shore.
The sheer white cliffs that frame the cove have made Fteri one of the island's most photographed beaches, and it has been named on international lists of the finest shores. The landscape, with the forest descending to the rocks, gives it an almost untrodden character.
There are no organized facilities on the shore. Access is either by boat or water taxi from Zola, or along a demanding footpath that descends and climbs back on foot.
