The sandy shore of Vitalades village
Gardeno beach stretches along southwest Corfu as the shore of the traditional village of Vitalades, a long ribbon of fine, golden sand. Its name is attributed to the small river that reaches the sea here and splits the beach into two parts.
The village of Vitalades itself, tradition holds, took its name from a Venetian feudal lord with the surname Vitalis who lived here in the 15th century. This is the quieter southern end of the island, away from the large resorts, set among olive groves and cypress trees, with the Gardeno stream forming a small wetland behind the sand.
It is an unorganized beach of fine sand and shallow waters, with tavernas and parking nearby. Access is by a paved road.
