The golden sands below Pelekas
Kontogialos, also known as Pelekas beach, is a large sandy stretch on the west coast of Corfu, below the village of Pelekas, about 13 kilometres from Corfu Town. It spreads out broadly beneath lush green hills.
Its name is attributed to the local topography, from the words "kontos" (short) and "gialos" (shore) describing the coast. High above the beach, Pelekas is famous for its sunset and for the celebrated viewpoint known as the "Kaiser's Throne", where, it is said, the German emperor Wilhelm II would climb to watch the sun go down in the early 20th century. In the 1970s and 1980s the beach was a favourite haunt of hippies.
It is an organized beach, with beach bars, tavernas, sunbeds, umbrellas and parking. Access is by paved road towards Pelekas and Kontogialos.
