The endless golden sand toward Cape Arkoudilas
Marathias is a very long, golden sandy beach in southern Corfu, near the village of the same name and Vitalades, stretching for kilometres to the south as far as Cape Arkoudilas. It lies about 30 kilometres from Corfu Town and only 10 kilometres from the port of Lefkimmi.
The village of Marathias was once built higher up, on a hill covered with olive trees, but, according to local tradition, a plague wiped out almost the entire population. The few who remained moved down lower, while on the site of the old settlement survive ruined houses, the cemetery and the little church of Panagia Lampovitissa.
It is a beach with both organized and free sections, with beach bars, tavernas, sunbeds, umbrellas and parking. Access is by paved road to Marathias.
