Paleokastritsa's main sandy bay below the monastery
Agios Spiridon is the central and largest sandy beach of Paleokastritsa, on the northwest coast of Corfu, about 25 kilometres from Corfu Town. It takes its name from the little church of Agios Spiridon beside the bay, dedicated to the patron saint of the island.
Paleokastritsa spreads across a string of coves, headlands and sea caves, and on the highest peak stands the Monastery of Panagia Theotokos, which tradition dates to the 13th century. A little further along, atop the rock, stand the ruins of the Byzantine castle of Angelokastro, and the name Paleokastritsa is attributed to this "old castle" of the area. The seabed in front of the beach is mostly sandy, while the shoreline alternates between sand and pebble.
It is an organized beach, with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, a bar and taverna, water sports and boat trips, and a large car park opposite. Access is by paved road, by car or local bus, to Paleokastritsa.
