The wild strand beneath the white cliffs
Arkoudilas lies at the southern tip of Corfu, about two kilometres from Kavos, a long strand of sand beneath sheer white cliffs, near Cape Asprokavos, the southernmost point of the island.
The name has nothing to do with bears, as people often assume; it is said to come from a local shrub or tree with a 'bear' name, such as the arkoudopournaro. Above the beach, at the cliff's edge, stand the ruins of the monastery of Panagia of Arkoudilas, which dates back to before 1511 and was declared a listed historic monument in 1986. Tradition holds it was a votive offering by the sons of a Corfiot nobleman who nearly drowned while fishing. Around it spreads the forest of Arkoudilas.
It is an unorganized beach of fine sand, with a seasonal pop-up bar, sunbeds and umbrellas. Access, according to the sources, is on foot, by boat or by 4x4, along a dirt track that grows rockier and steeper toward the end.
