The village-beach of the northwest tip

Arillas spreads along the northwest coast of Corfu, in a large bay whose sandy beach runs for more than a kilometre, with small headlands at either end. It is at once a settlement and a beach, in the corner of the island that looks out toward the Diapontian islands.

Life in Arillas began around the 1850s to 1870s, when a few people came down from the mountains and built houses of clay, olive wood and pebbles gathered from the beach. In 1941 the Italian army built a lookout post here to watch over the northwest of Corfu. Until the 1980s the shore was mostly pebbly, until the building of a pier helped hold the sand and gave it the sandy form it keeps to this day. In the 1970s a few travellers from Switzerland and Holland discovered the place, and gradually the first tavernas opened and the first hotel was built.

It is a large organized beach of fine sand, with beach bars, tavernas, sunbeds, umbrellas and parking, reached by a paved road.

About this beach

Arillas is exposed in the maistros — often choppy on summer NW/W afternoons. That comes from the measured shape of the coastline around it and our curated wind records — a seasonal picture, not a live forecast, so check live wind and waves before you go.

The bay at Arillas opens to the south-west, so it usually has natural cover from southerly, south-easterly and easterly winds.
