The fishing village with the Roman baths
Benitses sits on the southeast coast of Corfu, a way south of Corfu Town, with a beach of pebbles and coarse sand at the edge of the old fishing village. The settlement has been inhabited since Roman times, thanks to the area's abundant freshwater springs.
At the centre of the village survive the ruins of a Roman villa with baths, with a large barrel-vaulted hall, mosaic floors and an underfloor heating system (hypocaust). The village name first appears in Venetian documents in 1469 as 'Penitisai,' and is said to point to the area's abundant waters. During the Venetian period Corfu received, at various times, refugees from Epirus, the Peloponnese and Crete.
The beach is listed in the official 2026 Blue Flag register. It has pebbles and coarse sand, with tavernas and cafés in the adjoining village and parking nearby, reached by a paved road through Benitses.
