The sand between the lagoon and the open sea

Halikounas beach runs along southwest Corfu, a long strip of fine sand that separates the Korission lagoon from the open sea.

Behind the sand, dunes and cedar woods make up a rare landscape around Lake Korission, the island's largest lagoon, part of the Natura 2000 network and a haven for more than a hundred bird species. On the surrounding hills stands the Byzantine castle of Gardiki, built in the 13th century in the years of the Despotate of Epirus to guard the southwestern coast.

It is considered the largest sandy beach in southwest Corfu, with shallow waters and seasonal facilities: beach bars, sunbeds, kite and windsurf activity, as well as accessibility infrastructure for people with disabilities and a SEATRAC system. Access is by car, with parking along a rough, sandy track near the shore.
