The west coast with the Ortholithi
Agios Gordios lies on the west coast of Corfu, about twenty kilometres from Corfu Town. Its sandy shore stretches for over a kilometre and a half beneath sheer crags, and it takes its name from the small church of Agios Gordios that stands close to the sea, at the centre of the cove.
Two rocks mark its ends. At the southern end, below the village of Pentati, the Ortholithi rises straight out of the sea, a monolith whose name comes from the Greek words for 'upright' and 'stone' and which has become the most photographed emblem of the west coast. The rock even appears in a short story by the Corfiot writer Iakovos Polylas. On the northern side stands the Aerostatos, a rock said to have once served as a lookout.
It is a large organized beach of fine and coarse sand, with beach bars, tavernas, sunbeds and umbrellas, reached by a paved road with parking.
