The rock with a legend

Tis Grias to Pidima lies on the southeastern side of Andros, near Korthi, and stands out for the tall, solitary rock that rises out of the sand and sea. It is one of the most photographed shores on the island.

Its name (the Old Woman's Leap) is tied to a legend. It is said that an old woman who betrayed the local castle in Ottoman times climbed the rock and threw herself into the sea, turning to stone there. In another version she leapt from the grief of her widowhood. From a certain angle the rock recalls the profile of a woman in a headscarf.

It has no organized facilities. Access is by driving close to the shore and then walking down a descending path, or alternatively arriving from the sea. The bed is of fine and coarse sand, with shallow water.
