Neimporio: Chora's own beach

Neimporio is the central beach of Chora, the capital of Andros, just a few metres north of the town's seafront road. It spreads out in fine sand and pebbles right within the fabric of the town, which is why it remains the island's busiest spot for a swim to this day.

It was always the cosmopolitan front of Chora, back when the more remote beaches could only be reached by boat, and it still shelters fishing boats and yachts. From the shore you can pick out the Tourlitis lighthouse, built in 1887 and lit from 1897, the only lighthouse in Greece raised on a rock in the open sea. Nearby, on Riva square, stands the statue of the Unknown Sailor, placed in 1959 by the sculptor Michael Tombros in honour of the seafarers of Andros.

The beach is fully organized, with seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas, showers and WC. Tavernas, cafes and bars ring the shore, with parking close by, and access is comfortable on foot or by car from Chora.
