The little harbour with the noble name

Porto Roma sits on the Vasilikos peninsula, about 16 kilometres southeast of Zakynthos town, a small bay of sand and pebble with a fishing harbour at one end. The shore faces east, on the side of the island that looks toward the sunrise.

Its name is linked to the noble Roma family of Zakynthos, and it is said to honour Alexandros Romas (1863-1914), the Zakynthian politician who served as minister and President of the Hellenic Parliament and had ties to the area. The small harbour, from which boats set out to the surrounding coves, gives the beach the feel of a little fishing landing at the edge of the peninsula.

It is reached by a paved road, with a parking area, and tavernas operate near the shore. The ground is fine sand mixed with pebbles.
