Agios Nikolaos lies at the northeastern tip of the Vasilikos peninsula in southeastern Zakynthos, a broad sandy beach near the cape that closes off Laganas Bay. It takes its name from the little chapel of Agios Nikolaos that stands nearby.

The Vasilikos area has been inhabited since the depths of antiquity: stone tools from the Middle Paleolithic have been found at Agios Nikolaos, evidence that prehistoric people frequented the spot. The peninsula is famed for its sandy beaches, some of which belong to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, where the Caretta caretta sea turtle lays its eggs.
