The pebbled cove with the sea caves

Makris Gialos lies on the north coast of Zakynthos, between Alykes and the small harbor of Agios Nikolaos, a little cove of yellowish pebbles beneath tall cliffs. Its name, meaning 'long shore,' is one of the most common Greek coastal place names.

Its most distinctive feature is the caves that open in the surrounding rock: some reach the shore, while others can be approached only by swimming or by boat. Against their limestone walls the water takes on a deep turquoise color. Makris Gialos is also a departure point for the popular boat trips to the Blue Caves and the Navagio (Shipwreck) at the north of the island.

It is not organized in the strict sense: a canteen and a taverna operate seasonally, and there is parking. The shore is of pebbles and coarse sand, and access is by paved road in northern Zakynthos.
