The rocky diving cove on the western coast

Porto Roxa is a rocky cove on the western coast of Zakynthos, near Agios Leon, carved into the imposing cliffs that define this side of the island. There is no sand here, only flat, worn rocks that descend into the deep, transparent water.

Western Zakynthos is all rock and precipice, without sandy beaches, and Porto Roxa is one of its best-known spots for diving and underwater exploration. The first part of its name, 'Porto,' recalls the long Venetian presence in the Ionian Islands.

Above the shore a taverna and a cafe operate, with parking, and a wooden platform anchored in the rocks is said to ease entry into the water. The shore is unshaped and rocky, with deep water, and access is by a local paved road in western Zakynthos.
