The sandy beach named after the salt pans

Alykanas lies in northern Zakynthos, next to Alykes, a long sandy beach that is essentially a continuation of the neighboring shore. Its name betrays its history: it comes from the alykes, the salt pans where salt was once gathered.

The wider Alykes area was the island's main center of salt production, and both the settlement and the beach owe their names to these shallow, briny basins. Behind the sand stretches a flat, cultivated plain, in contrast to the rocky fronts of the western coast.

It is fully organized, with beach bars, tavernas, sunbeds, umbrellas and parking, and it has been awarded a Blue Flag. The shore is of fine sand with shallow water, and access is by paved road at Alykanas.
