The long sands at the heart of the National Marine Park

Laganas stretches along the southern coast of Zakynthos, one of the island's longest sandy beaches, its fine sand running the length of the bay that shares its name. It is the island's most popular resort and the hub of its nightlife, built along a shoreline that runs for several kilometres.

Laganas Bay forms the heart of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, established in 1999 as the first marine park in Greece and the Mediterranean for the conservation of the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta. The bay's nesting beaches record roughly 900 to 2,000 nests a year, and from May to October special regulations apply to protect the nests within the bay.

It is an organized beach, with beach bars, tavernas, sunbeds, umbrellas and watersports, reached by a paved road. Sand and the Park's rules coexist here, as sections of the shore fall under the turtle-nesting regulations.
