The nesting sands at the edge of the bay

Kalamaki lies on the southern coast of Zakynthos, at the eastern edge of Laganas Bay, a long sandy beach that forms part of the National Marine Park. The shore runs for several kilometres and falls under the nesting regulations for the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta.

The Park was established in 1999 for the conservation of the sea turtle, and Kalamaki is one of the beaches where females come ashore at night to bury their eggs in the sand. At the location known as Ellinika, near Kalamaki, Mycenaean tombs have been found, evidence of the area's very ancient settlement.

Organization is limited, with seasonal canteens, cafés and parking, in keeping with the Park's rules. The beach has been awarded a Blue Flag and is reached by a paved road.
