The fishing hamlet with boat houses
Firopotamos is a tiny fishing hamlet on the north coast, with only a handful of permanent residents. Its hallmark is the "syrmata": single-room boat garages carved into the soft volcanic rock at the water's edge.
They are named after the cable (syrma) used to winch — to "drag" — the boats out of the sea in winter. Their bright, colourful doors are not decoration: they were painted with whatever paint was left over from the boat, so each syrma matched its vessel.
