The beach with hot sand
Paleochori sits right on top of the living volcanic system of Milos. Underwater hot springs and fumaroles warm the sand and the shallows: dig a small hole near the water and you feel the heat, while in places you can see bubbles rising from the seabed.
The cliffs behind the beach are stained red, orange and yellow by iron oxides and sulphur — a vivid imprint of the volcano. The name means "old village".
