The lunar landscape of Milos
Sarakiniko is the most recognisable landscape on Milos: pale, off-white volcanic rock — compacted ash and pumice — that wind and waves have sculpted into smooth, rounded forms. With almost no vegetation, it looks so much like the surface of the moon that locals call it "the moon of Milos".
Its name comes from the Saracens, the Arab pirates who used these coves as a hideout in the Middle Ages. Just offshore, half-sunk in the shallows, still lies the hull of the tanker "Africa", run aground in a storm in 2003.
There are no facilities — just the bare white rock, a small beach at the end of the gorge and deep blue water. Bring water and shade. It is a favourite spot for cliff jumping and for sunset photography, and has served as a backdrop for films and music videos.
