The fjord beside the ancient city
Papafragas is a narrow, fjord-like inlet on the north coast: channels cut into the soft white-grey volcanic rock, with near-vertical walls dropping into deep blue-green water and interconnected sea caves. The sand itself is minimal.
Right beside it lies Phylakopi, an important Bronze Age city — you can combine your swim with a glimpse of Aegean prehistory.
The name belongs to local tradition: "papas" (priest) and "Frankos" (Frank). The best-known version has the last Catholic priest of Milos mooring his boat here; another speaks of a pirate hideout. You reach it down a steep path with steps carved into the rock.
