White pebbles just outside Vathy

Filiatro lies on the southern coast of Ithaca, the closest beach to Vathy, the island's capital, only a few minutes by car from the harbour. White, shiny pebbles line the shore and give way to coarse sand toward one end, while trees reach down almost to the water.

It is one of the best-known beaches of Ithaca, set in turquoise water within a green-clad bay. The vegetation that comes down to the shore offers natural shade, while the island as a whole is tied, by Homeric tradition, to the homeland and the return of Odysseus.

Part of the beach is organized, with a beach bar and seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas on one section, while further along the shore stays natural. It is reached by car from Vathy, along a narrow road with limited parking near the beach at peak times.
