The long Corinthian Gulf shore below Kithairon
Psatha stretches along the western coast of Attica, on the Corinthian Gulf, west of Vilia and at the foot of Mount Kithairon. It is one of the largest beaches of West Attica, with a length reported at around 2.5 kilometres. It is said to take its name from the psatha, a rush-like plant that once grew abundantly in the coastal wetland behind the beach, while in antiquity the bay is reported to have served as a harbour of the Megarians under the name Panormos.
The Psatha wetland, the coastal marsh that gave the area its name, is reported to have been almost entirely drained, yet tamarisk trees still shade parts of the shore. The mountain slopes dropping steeply to the gulf give the landscape a character that, as is often written, feels more like an island than a suburb of Athens, and the western orientation means the sun sets over the waters of the Corinthian Gulf.
The beach has fine pebbles and organized sections with sunbeds and umbrellas in season, refreshment stands in the northern part and restaurants close by. There is natural shade from tamarisks in places, and access is by a paved road.
