The shore below the ancient fortress of Aigosthena
The southern section of Porto Germeno beach stretches along Aigosthena bay in West Attica, on the waters of the Corinthian Gulf. The settlement occupies the site of ancient Aigosthena, and was in fact called Germenos until 1940, when it was officially renamed Aigosthena. Tradition holds that the name Germeno derives from the hieromonk abbot Germanos, while the 'Porto' is most likely attributed to the Venetians.
Above the shore rises the ancient fortress of Aigosthena, built in the second half of the 4th century BC and considered among the best-preserved fortifications of ancient Greece, with towers among the tallest to survive to our times. Pausanias records that the seer Melampus was worshipped at Aigosthena, with an annual festival held in his honour. Along the shore, tamarisk trees and the small boats of the bay compose the picture of an old seaside settlement.
The beach is pebbled and remains unorganized, with waste bins and natural shade from tamarisks in places. The facilities of the settlement are close by, and access is by a paved road.
