The sandy crossing to the islet

Bella Vraka lies at Sivota in Thesprotia, the sandy strip that links the shore to the green islet of Megalo Mourtemeno. Its name, of Italian origin, is by tradition traced to the end of the Greco-Italian war: it is said that in 1940 Italian soldiers took refuge among the island's dense trees and, charmed by the setting, called it "Bella Vraka".

Its defining feature is a natural phenomenon. When the water rises, part of the strip is covered and the islet, only a few metres off, seems cut away; when the tide draws back, a slender isthmus about a metre wide emerges, forming a twin beach and letting you cross to the island on foot. Megalo Mourtemeno is the third largest of the Sivota islets.

The beach is unorganised. Parking is reported on the rise above the shore, along with water-sports activity and a mobile snack point, while the amenities of Sivota lie a short distance away. According to the beach's official profile, access is by paved road or by tourist boats from Sivota harbour.
