The pine-fringed bay with the little harbour
Pefkos lies on the west side of Skyros, in a deep horseshoe-shaped bay about 10 kilometres from Chora and close to Linaria, the island's port. It takes its name from the pine trees that run down the low hills almost to the waterline, and a small harbour sits at one end of the bay.
The seaside hamlet of the same name is one of the island's youngest settlements, officially recorded as a separate community for the first time in the 1991 census and home to only a handful of permanent residents. It belongs to the pine-clad western side of Skyros, where forests of pine run down to the sea and give the area its distinctive green character, in contrast to the barer southern part of the island.
The beach, with coarse sand, pebbles and shallow water, is not organized. A seasonal canteen operates in the summer months, and a taverna and cafe can be found nearby. The road is paved almost to the shore, with parking close by, and the pines provide natural shade.
