One of the longest beaches in Greece

Golden sand with shallow, gentle water and an easy entry — well suited to swimming and families — on the south coast. The sandy shore runs roughly 8 km, the longest on Lesvos, so you can always find a quiet stretch. It is also a loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtle nesting ground.

Organized along its length (sunbeds, tavernas, beach bars). Its distinctive side is beneath the sand: the Gulf of Vatera is a major palaeontological site, with fossils of ancient horses, mastodons and a giant tortoise — from when, ~2 million years ago, the area was a subtropical shallow sea.
