The pine-planted plaz below the castle
Tsamakia Beach sits at the edge of Mytilini, on Lesvos, just a few metres from the waterfront and below the town's castle, which makes it the closest beach to the centre. Its name, local tradition holds, comes from the 'tsamia', the pine trees planted here in the early twentieth century.
The site has a long story. In 1913 the municipal council decided to plant it with pines, a task finished by 1915, and from 1920 the pine grove became a favourite promenade for the people of Mytilini, with fourteen little cafes by the end of the decade and the most famous being the 'Apelleion'. In that same pine grove, in 1942, the occupying forces executed Resistance fighters, and monuments raised in later years have kept their memory alive up to the present day.
It is an urban plaz of pebbles and coarse sand, with shade from tamarisks and pines, cafes and eating spots, and parking close by. It is reported to be organized, with umbrellas and sunbeds in season, and it has been awarded a Blue Flag. Access is easy by paved road, as it lies within the fabric of the town.
