Xyla: the beach that took its name from the sea

Xyla lies on the western side of Kea (Tzia), a few kilometres south of Korissia, a beach of fine and coarse sand in a relatively out-of-the-way corner of the island.

Its name is tied to the sea. It is said to come from the wood (xyla) that the waves cast ashore during the winter months, timber that by local tradition came down from the rivers of nearby Evia. Its relative distance and dirt-road approach keep it quieter than some of Kea's other beaches.

It is partly organized, with seasonal umbrellas and sunbeds but no natural shade, so it is worth bringing your own. Cafés and tavernas are found nearby, and parking is available close by. Access is by a passable dirt road.
