Koundouros: the sandy bay of the windmills
Koundouros stretches along the southwestern coast of Kea (Tzia), a wide sandy bay of fine and coarse sand dotted with the island's characteristic stone Cycladic windmills. It is one of Kea's best-known and most organized beaches, ringed by a string of smaller sandy coves.
The area carries a long history reaching back centuries. By tradition, this was the site of ancient Nirissos, the harbour of Poiessa, one of the four cities that made up ancient Kea's Tetrapolis together with Ioulida, Koressia and Karthaia. Many of the old windmills have over the years been restored and turned into homes, giving the bay its distinctive look. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag on various occasions.
It is fully organized, with a beach bar, seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas, a café, and seasonal showers and WC, while parking is available nearby. The shallow water and sand suit families, and access is by a paved road.
