The bay of the sunken ancient city
Vagionia lies on the north coast of Poros, on the opposite side of the island from the town, a deep bay framed by pine trees. It is one of the few spots on the island where the sea hides a whole ancient story beneath its surface.
This bay is reported to have been the site of the ancient port of Kalaureia, which served the famous sanctuary of Poseidon, where the orator Demosthenes took refuge in 322 BC while pursued by Antipater. The port is believed to have sunk in an earthquake at an unknown date, and it is said that, swimming a little way out with a mask, paved streets and the foundations of ancient houses can still be made out on the seabed.
Vagionia is a free beach without full organization, with fine pebbles, natural pine shade in places and water that deepens fairly quickly. The paved road reaches close to the shore, on the northern side of the island.
