The long sandy stretch on the road to the monastery

Askeli is the best-known and most organized beach on Poros, a long south-facing sandy stretch a few minutes east of the town. It runs along the coastal road that leads to the historic Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, while behind it the settlement climbs amphitheatrically up a pine-covered hillside.

The neighbouring monastery, founded in 1720, gives the area its historical depth: tradition holds that Iakovos II, Metropolitan of Athens, was healed by drinking water from the nearby spring and founded Zoodochos Pigi there. Askeli itself grew into the heart of the island's summer life, with cafes and tavernas close to the shore.

The beach is organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas, seasonal showers and WC, a beach bar in the summer season, plus seasonal water sports and diving. The sand shifts from fine to coarser, the water stays shallow near the shore, and there is parking nearby, with a paved road all the way to the beach.

About this beach

Askeli usually stays sheltered when the meltemi blows. That comes from the measured shape of the coastline around it and our curated wind records — a seasonal picture, not a live forecast, so check live wind and waves before you go.

The bay at Askeli opens to the south, so it usually has natural cover from westerly, north-westerly and south-westerly winds.

Askeli has sand underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.

For amenities, Askeli has an organised beach, a beach bar, sunbeds, parking nearby and food nearby.
