The little islet with the bridge at the southern tip

Mongonisi lies at the southernmost tip of Paxos, about four kilometres below Gaios, on a green little islet joined to the main island by a short, narrow bridge. Its name keeps the Greek word for island ('nisi'), fitting for what is really a small, low islet with fine sand along its cove.

Its landscape is intensely green, with olive trees and low scrub reaching almost to the water. On the neighbouring islet of Kaltsonissi, separated from Mongonisi by a narrow, shallow channel, stands the chapel of Agios Spyridon, while sea caves open along the shore and are reached by boat. A small harbour hosts pleasure boats in this southern corner of the island.

The beach is organized, with a restaurant, seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas, a shower, changing rooms and watersports in high season. The sand and natural greenery give shade, and access is by car over the bridge that links it to Paxos.

About this beach

Mongonisi has partial shelter in the maistros — calm some days, choppy on stronger ones. That comes from the measured shape of the coastline around it and our curated wind records — a seasonal picture, not a live forecast, so check live wind and waves before you go.

Mongonisi is oriented towards the north, so it usually has natural cover from north-easterly, north-westerly and westerly winds.

Mongonisi has sand underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.

For amenities, Mongonisi has an organised beach, sunbeds, natural shade and food nearby. There is a campsite nearby (Camping Mongonisi, ~24 m).
