The city sands with a Thessalian name
Rapsani is the central city beach of Kavala, a sandy shore of about 250 metres beside the Faliro Municipal Park, between the Kalamitsa cape and the city's port. Its name, curiously, is not local: it is said that after the war two retired gendarmes from the village of Rapsani near Larissa opened a small fish taverna here named after their home village, and the name gradually took hold across the whole area.
The shore has a long bathing history: it was once known as "Banieres" and also "Neraida", after the structures that separated men and women at the sea baths, while in the 1940s the area was called Faliro, after the seaside entertainment venue of the same name that for a time also housed Kavala's Municipal Archaeological Museum. To this day it remains the seafront of the city's everyday life, with the promenade reaching right down to the sand.
It is an organized beach with free entry, sunbeds, umbrellas, WC, showers and changing rooms, with restaurants, tavernas and cafés all around. The seabed near the shore is sandy and shallow in the first metres, and the beach is easily reached from within the city, on foot or by local buses.
