The cape of the Spartan general
Vrasidas is the beach of the cape of the same name near Nea Peramos in Kavala, between Ammolofoi and the village, on the peninsula behind the hill of Byzantine Anaktoroupolis. Small coves of sand and rock alternate along the peninsula, with greenery running down to the shore.
The name recalls Brasidas, the Spartan general of the Peloponnesian War: local tradition holds that his fleet was trapped in the bay of Nea Peramos by the Athenians and that the general hauled his ships overnight across the narrow strip of land to escape, while another version has Brasidas meeting his death here. The wider area is linked to ancient Oesyme, and it is reported that around 1950 to 1960 residents found wooden stakes driven in a line from shore to shore, a find that local memory tied to the legend.
The beach is unorganized, with free entry and a free parking area. Access is by a passable dirt road in relatively good condition, starting from the castle entrance, and there is a café nearby.
