The river of the mills
Mylopotas lies on the western side of Ios, about two kilometres from Chora, and is considered the largest beach on the island. A long ribbon of fine golden sand that built the place's reputation.
The beach's name is linked to the Mylopotamos stream that runs down to the shore. It is said to derive from the mills of Chora, the windmills that still stand above the settlement and gave their name to the river of the mills. From the 1970s Mylopotas became synonymous with youthful Ios, when the first visitors came down here with their sleeping bags.
It is a fully organized beach, with seasonal umbrellas and sunbeds, a beach bar, cafes and tavernas nearby, and watersports on offer. There is parking close by, and access is easy via a paved road and a frequent bus from Chora.
