The coves of The Big Blue

Manganari sits at the southern tip of Ios, about 23 kilometres from Chora, and is formed by a series of consecutive coves of fine golden sand.

The beach became widely known as one of the filming locations for Luc Besson's «The Big Blue» (Le Grand Bleu), in 1988. Scenes from the two protagonists' childhood were shot here, and the landscape of the coves has stayed tied to the film ever since.

Manganari is organized seasonally, with umbrellas and sunbeds, a beach bar, cafes and tavernas nearby, and watersports. Access is by a paved road, while seasonally there is a bus or boat connection, and parking close by.
