The long golden sands made for surfing
Messakti sits on the north coast of Ikaria, between Armenistis and Gialiskari, one of the island's longest beaches, with fine golden sand. By one reading its name means 'the middle shore', as it stretches across the middle of the northern coastline.
At one end the Myrsonas river empties into the sea, running down from the Rahes highlands and forming a green wetland at its mouth; tradition holds the river took its name from its many myrtle bushes. Open to the northern Aegean, Messakti became known for surfing, while the chapel of Analipsi crowns the little harbour of Gialiskari.
It is among the most organized beaches on Ikaria, with sunbeds and umbrellas, a surf school and water activities, and cafes and tavernas nearby. Access is easy, down a flight of steps from the paved road, with parking close by.
