The first of the Limanakia of Hersonissos
Sarantari lies at Cape Sarandaris, at the western end of the well-known Limanakia of Hersonissos, about 27 kilometres east of Heraklion. Its name is said to come from the chapel of Agios Georgios Sarantaris, built on the western side of the cape.
The cape, with its whitish limestone cliffs, marks the beginning of a string of small inlets, the Limanakia, which continue eastward to the harbour of Hersonissos, each with its own mix of sand and white stone. Sarantari is the westernmost and one of the most characteristic of them, a small bay carved between the rocks, a breath away from the busy tourist front of Hersonissos.
It is a small organized cove with sunbeds and umbrellas, a cafe and parking close by, ground of fine sand and rocks, and a Blue Flag award. Access is by a paved local road at the Limanakia of Hersonissos.
