The little cove with the twin islets

Mades beach lies about 20 kilometres northwest of Heraklion and 4 kilometres east of Agia Pelagia, next to Lygaria. The name of the small settlement is said to derive from the Greek verb mado, because the local stones crumble and break with great ease.

It is a small pebbly inlet ringed by rocks, with the hamlet of Mades right above it, a place with the character of a little summer neighbourhood. Off its western end rise two small islets that give the landscape its most recognisable image, while the rocky seabed of the cove hosts rich marine life.

The beach is organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas, tavernas and parking. The ground consists of pebbles and rocks, and access is by a paved road that comes close to the shore.
