The enclosed cove named after a plant
Lygaria is a small enclosed cove about 21 kilometres northwest of Heraklion, one kilometre east of Agia Pelagia. Its name is linked to the monastery of Panagia Ligariani, also known as Deligara, that once stood here. Popular tradition holds that it was named after the lygaria, the pliant shrub that once grew abundantly in the area, though it is said in fact to derive from a landholder named Ligaras in the Venetian period.
The church of Panagia, a remnant of the old monastery, survives near the cove to this day. The small boats and fishing caiques moored in its waters give the scene the feel of a fishing hamlet, while smooth slabs of rock surface in places along the shoreline. Beyond the western headland hides the little beach of Parasfougaro.
The beach is organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas, tavernas and parking. Its ground combines fine sand with fine pebbles, and access is by a paved road that comes close to the shore.
