The shore below the monastery

Pantanassa lies about 12 kilometers west of Heraklion, on the Malevizi coast below Rogdia. It is named after the neighboring monastery of Panagia Pantanassa, a convent built on a pine-covered rise above the sea, founded in 1972 by Metropolitan Nikolaos Xenos with charitable aims.

A small harbor was built beside the beach, changing the shape of the shore and splitting it in two. Pines still lean from the surrounding slopes, and a short distance away rises the rock with the ruins of Paliokastro, a Venetian fort that once watched over the Gulf of Heraklion.

It is a free, unorganized beach of mostly fine pebbles, with tamarisk trees and natural shade in places. A paved road reaches close to the shore.
