Where the flocks once paused to rest
Stalida spreads along Crete's north coast, about 30 kilometers east of Heraklion, between Hersonissos and Malia. Its name is said to come from the verb stalizo, as shepherds would pause here to rest their flocks, long before the small settlement grew into a resort.
The village was founded by people from mountain Mochos who came down to the sea, and to this day a trail climbs from the coast to the village on the mountain. Near the beach stands the Byzantine church of Agios Ioannis, dated to around 1600, while a small colony of Cretan date palms survives along the shore. A rocky cape divides the beach into two sections.
It is an organized beach with sunbeds, umbrellas, tavernas and restaurants along the seafront, parking and shallow water, with a shore of mostly pebbles. A paved road reaches close to the beach.
